| The first of Helen
Hollick's Arthurian trilogy, The Kingmaking, was a real breakthrough for me as far
as my interest in Arthurian literature went. I had always been interested in the
legends but
this book was far better than anything I had read previously mainly because
the story takes place in a historical setting. The trilogy begins with
Arthur as a boy learning his true parentage and ends with his death at
Camlann. It deals with
modern themes and has characters that seem far more real than those found in
the pages of TH White's books.
Full marks to Helen Hollick for breathing new life into the legend but mostly for placing the characters of Arthur and Gwenhwyfar into a realistic historical setting. It would really be nice to see if film or television could come up with an Arthurian drama with this level of intrigue, grittiness and excitement.
