| The
film was produced by Ridley Scott who had first tried to get a production
going in the late 1970s. It is easy to wonder at what Tristan + Isolde
might have been if Scott had directed this himself rather than it being
left to Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Waterworld).
However, that is not to say that the film is poor in fact it is strangely
affecting and James Franco as Tristan is actually rather good. The
interesting themes in the film just needed a bigger budget to be explored
and perhaps some of the characterization was a little weak. Overall there
is much to enjoy as instead of going with the mindless entertainment of
Robin Hood, Reynolds kept to the intrigue of his 2002 film, 'The Count of
Monte Cristo.'
