The Tudors

The Tudors is a TV series based on the early historical reign of King Henry VIII, although it is very much a work of fiction. The show was created, produced and written by Michael Hirst, who previously worked on the 1998 film Elizabeth. The series was commissioned by Showtime and first aired in April 2007.

If you were being critical you could argue that the series is an example of history being dumbed-down and sexed up with a large amount of unnecessary historical inaccuracy, but there is no doubting that it is entertaining. UK Academics have accused Hirst of "Americanising" the series, and 'The Tudors' has certainly gone down better in North America where it has even been nominated for Golden Globes.

Leanda de Lisle, a Tudor biographer, speaking in relation to it being shown on the BBC, said: "Overall the series is badly written with an extremely cheap feel to it.

"It is hugely disappointing. With inaccuracies in almost every sentence, the BBC is dumbing down the Tudor period." (Obviously the series is not actually made by the BBC.

She added: "The characters talk in completely unnatural ways, addressing their own family members as "Anne Boleyn" or "Mary Boleyn" so that we, the stupid audience, understand who they're supposed to be.

Many in Britain blamed the lack of knowledge of the American audience for the program's flaws but despite the criticism two series have already been made and a third will premier on Showtime on the 5th April 2009.
