When it came out on TV
for the first time, Merlin, the mini-series, was considered to be quite an
event. It is an epic story of the legendary wizard/druid's adventures in
the dark ages of Britain although it covers legends of the Arthurian
world. It has had it's critics but at the very least it is a great piece
of television entertainment.

Merlin is directed by Steve Barron and he does a decent job particularly with the scenes at the beginning of the film. There is also an impressive cast including Rutgar Hauer, Helena Bonham Carter, Martin Short, Miranda Richardson and Sam Neill who is very watchable in the lead role of Merlin. The production values on the film were very much TV standard but there was still a good use of CGI. It was interesting to see how many people who worked on John Boorman's 'Excalibur' were in this production. This included the actors Nicholas Clay and Robert Addie. Overall this is one of the most enjoyable TV productions I have come across. Steve Carter
