Gaius is Camelot's Court Physician and a mentor to Merlin. He takes the young wizard into his service after Merlin's mother writes to him. Gaius finds out about Merlin's abilities early on and tells him to keep them a secret. However, he does believe that Merlin should use his gift and gets him the magical books he needs and becomes a father figure to the young man.

Gaius persuades Merlin not to tell Arthur of his abilities and helps the wizard to deal with magical threats to the kingdom. Gaius also has a long and good relationship with King Uther although they do sometimes clash over the issue of magic and how to defeat it. Gaius is also close to Morgana and is aware of her magical gift.
