Arthur (Played by Bradley James)

Prince Arthur is the son and only child of King Uther of Camelot and therefore the heir to the throne of the mythical kingdom of Albion. His mother was Igrayne, who died in childbirth after the failure of the magic that helped her to conceive her son.

He is at first an arrogant young man who supports his father's outlawing of magic. While his relationship with Merlin gets off to a bad start he begins to realise that there is something special about the young wizard even though he has no idea of Merlin's gift. Arthur makes Merlin his servant and begins to value his loyalty.

Arthur has a difficult relationship with Uther's ward Morgana, as she is far more questioning of the King and his actions towards people who practice magic. Also, as the story progresses Arthur becomes more aware of Gwen particularly after the death of her father.

Unlike most traditional Arthurian tales, the Arthur of this story appears to be actually older than Merlin, is not Morgana's half-brother and certainly has not fathered Mordred.

There have been many credible theories regarding the existence of Arthur and he could be a mythical character placed into a historical setting or real person that myths were built around. In his earliest mentions and in Welsh tales, he is never given the title of King and many think that he was more likely to be a powerful Warlord as an early text refers to him as Dux Bellorum (Duke of Battles).
