Episode 2/13 ~ Valiant (27th September 2008)

Written by Howard Overman

Directed By James Hawes

Plot ~ Arrogant Knight, Valiant (Will Mellor) gets a wizard to make him a shield painted with magical and deadly snakes in readiness for an annual sword tournament which is to be held in Camelot. After being told of the power of the snakes, Valiant uses them to kill the wizard.

Once at Camelot, Valiant is soon installed as one of the favourites to win the tournament against Prince Arthur and the other Knights of the realm. Meanwhile, Merlin helps prepare Arthur for the competition.

It is while he is attending to Arthur's armour that he comes across Valiant's shield and not only hears a hissing sound but also sees the painted snakes moving their eyes. Merlin becomes more suspicious when he and Gaius examine one of Valiant's beaten opponents to find a mark on the knight's neck suggesting he has been bitten by a snake.

When Merlin tries to expose Valiant as a cheat he finds that no one will believe him. Merlin must then stop Valiant before Arthur becomes the next victim of the shield when the two knights meet in the tournament final.
