Episode 13/13 ~ Le Morte d'Arthur (13th December 2008)

Written by Julian Jones

Directed By David Moore

Plot ~ When Arthur and his men go on a hunting trip they encounter a monster which has the head of a serpent and the body of a lion. Back at Camelot Gaius informs Arthur and Uther that the creature is 'The Questing Beast' a monster from the old religion whose bite is deadly. Gaius believes that the monsters coming is a dangerous omen. Morgana also has a foreboding dream about Prince Arthur.

Uther refuses to accept Gaius's claims that the creature can only be killed by magic. So the Prince, his knights and Merlin set out to hunt it and soon track the beast to it's cave lair. However, before Merlin can intervene the monster jumps out from the darkness and bites Arthur. Merlin destroys the creature but it appears that Arthur is mortally wounded.

The Great Dragon tells Merlin that the Questing Beast is a creature of the old ways and can only be saved by one of the same religion who has power over life and death. Merlin must go to the Blessed Isle of Avalon if Arthur is to be saved.

Gaius helps Merlin with the clues to get there but the physician knows that the old religion will want a life in return for saving Arthur's. So Merlin sets off for Avalon and once on the island is confronted by Nimueh. The sorceress gives Merlin a cup of life for Arthur to drink from. Can Merlin save Arthur and accept the price for doing so?
