Episode 1/13 ~ The Dragon's Call (20th September 2008)

Written by Julian Jones

Directed By James Hawes

Plot ~ A naive young Merlin (Colin Morgan) is sent to Camelot, the home of the King of Albion, by his mother and straight away witnesses the execution of a young man who has broken King Uther's (Anthony Head) laws by using magic.

Merlin is aware that he has certain magical abilities and when he uses these to save court physician Gaius (Richard Wilson) from falling to his death, he is warned to keep them a secret.

Merlin then manages to get into trouble by insulting King Uther's son, Prince Arthur (Bradley James). He finds himself in the stocks, which is where he meets maid servant Gwen (Angel Coulby).

Merlin is then drawn beneath the castle where he finds the Great Dragon (Voiced by John Hurt) who Uther has imprisoned. The Dragon is the last of it's kind and informs Merlin of his true destiny. The young wizard must use his abilities to protect Prince Arthur, the heir to the throne.

This role is brought into question much earlier than Merlin would like when the mother (Eve Myles) of the young man who is earlier executed for his use of magic returns to take revenge on Uther by trying to kill Arthur.
