The film is based on the epic poem 'The Song of Roland' and the legend of Orlando Innamorato. It is being produced by Delux Productions and is being filmed in London, Belgium and Luxembourg.

'The Song Of Roland' is based on a relatively minor historical incident the Battle of Roncevaux Pass on August 15, 778, in which the rearguard of Charlemagne's retreating Franks are attacked and slaughtered by Basques.

Orlando Innamorato is an epic poem written by the Italian Renaissance author Matteo Maria Boiardo, which also involves Charlemagne. In the poem Orlando goes on many heroic quests which eventually lead him to the Moors siege of Paris and their struggle against Charlemagne's army.

The budget of the production is around $30 million and Peter O'Toole has already suggested that he feels he has the best chance yet of finally winning an oscar. The film is to be directed by Raoul Ruiz.
