It is difficult to know where Hengest
and his brother Horsa originated from. It is suggested by a number of
historians that Hengest ruled over the Jutes in south east Britain but
there is no evidence that suggests that he came to Britain from Jutland.
There is certainly evidence to suggest that the two brothers could well
have been Angles who settled in East Anglia. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle
certainly lists Hengest as an Angel as he would have come over from the
area of Angeln.
In
Helen Hollick's Pendragon's Banner trilogy, Hengest is a Jute invited by
Vortigern to help defeat the British Warlord's enemies.
