Bernard Cornwell

(February 23, 1944 –                 )

He is a prolific and popular English historical writer who is best known for his series of books that look at the adventures of Napoleonic soldier, Richard Sharpe.

His Arthurian Britain trilogy deals with Post-Roman Britain and the difficulties for the native Britons, who are threatened by invasion from the Anglo-Saxons in the East and raids from the Irish in the West. At the same time, there are internal power struggles between their petty kingdoms and friction between the old Druidic religion and newly arrived Christianity.

The story is narrated by the character Derfel Cadarn who is brought up in Avalon with Merlin before going on to fight with Arthur.

In April 2007, Alan Campbell sent a message to Mr Cornwell to find out what he thought of other Arthurian literature:-

Alan: Hi, I love your Arthur trilogy and wondered what you thought of other Arthurian writers you have read. For example, Helen Hollick's Pendragon's Banner trilogy was a tremendous read. Have you come across it?

Mr Cornwell: I have, and think it was terrific. My favourite, though, remains TH White, The Sword in the Stone.
