The story follows a robot named WALL-E, who is designed to clean up a waste-covered Earth far in the future.

'Pixar’s WALL•E succeeds at being three things at once: an enthralling animated film, a visual wonderment and a decent science-fiction story.' Roger Ebert

The film uses nonlinear narration and neosurrealism to explore the nature of memory and romantic love.

'Works marvel after marvel in expressing the bewildering beauty and existential horror of being trapped inside one's own addled mind, and in allegorising the self-preserving amnesia of a broken but hopeful heart.' Jessica Winter

The movie was based on the fourth novel in a pentalogy, known in China as the Crane-Iron Pentalogy, by wuxia novelist Wang Dulu.

'With its gift for showing things that can't be described, Crouching Tiger's blend of the magical, the mythical and the romantic fills a need in us we might not even realize we had.' Kenneth Turan

The film follows a sullen ten-year-old girl who is in the process of moving to a new town, and chronicles her adventures in a world of spirits and monsters.

'Initially seems like a Through the Looking-Glass fantasy, but rapidly picks up a resonance, weight and complexity that make it all but Shakespearean.' Derek Adams

Continuing the plot of The Fellowship of the Ring, the film intercuts three storylines, as Frodo and Sam continue their quest to destroy the One Ring in Mordor and meet Gollum, its former owner.

'In size and scale, Jackson has redefined the word 'epic' -- but his attention to the small things really gives this series its awesome stature.' Time Out

Pan's Labyrinth takes place in Spain, in May and June, 1944, five years after the Spanish Civil War, during the early Franquist period.

'Dark, dreamlike and dangerous, Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale every bit as scary and moving as they were always meant to be.' Jonathan Trout

The film tells the story of an aspiring actress named Betty Elms, newly arrived in Los Angeles, California, who meets and befriends an amnesiac hiding in her aunt's apartment.

'Few will be able to resist its heady sense of intrigue and two riveting lead performances by Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring.' Kirk Honeycutt

An adaptation of Ron Hansen's 1983 novel of the same name, the film dramatizes the relationship between James and Ford.

'Above all, there's the sense of immersion in a world of harsh beauty whose time is running out. It's to be hoped that non-American audiences embrace this film: it's one of the year's very best.' David Gritten

The Dark Lord, Sauron launches the final stages of his conquest of Middle-earth.

'Return of the King is such a crowning achievement, such a visionary use of all the tools of special effects, such a pure spectacle, that it can be enjoyed even by those who have not seen the first two films.' Roger Ebert

Adapted from the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name, No Country for Old Men tells the story of an ordinary man to whom chance delivers a fortune that is not his.

'No Country for Old Men is as good a film as the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, have ever made, and they made Fargo.' Roger Ebert

Batman (Christian Bale) has to combat a new criminal threat, The Joker (Heath Ledger).

'Iron Man and even more so The Dark Knight move the genre into deeper waters. They realize, as some comic-book readers instinctively do, that these stories touch on deep fears, traumas, fantasies and hopes.' Roger Ebert

The movie takes place in Hong Kong, 1962. Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung), a journalist, rents a room in an apartment of a building on the same day as So Lai-zhen (Maggie Cheung).

'This film raises its fascination with enveloping atmosphere and suppressed emotion to a ravishing, almost hypnotic level.' Kenneth Turan

Russell Crowe portrays the loyal General Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is betrayed when the Emperor's ambitious son Commodus (Phoenix) murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus if forced to be come a gladiator.

'Huge in scope and endlessly exciting, Gladiator is the new word in blockbuster.' Ben Falk

The film involves the monitoring of the cultural scene of East Berlin by agents of the Stasi.

'The complex but lucid script and Hagen Bogndanski’s sombre noir camerawork serve not only to establish a brooding atmosphere of fear, doubt and suspicion but to create a suspenseful thriller of political and moral relevance.' Geoff Andrew

It depicts the growth of organized crime in the Cidade de Deus suburb of Rio, with the closure of the film depicting the war between the drug dealer Li'l Zé and criminal Knockout Ned.

'Breathtaking and terrifying, urgently involved with its characters, it announces a new director of great gifts and passions: Fernando Meirelles.' Roger Ebert

Set in Middle-earth, the story tells of the Dark Lord Sauron, who is seeking the One Ring. The Ring has found its way to the young hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood).

'Made with intelligence, imagination, passion and skill, propulsively paced and shot through with an aged-in-oak sense of wonder.' Kenneth Turan

It tells the story of a silver-miner-turned-oil-man on a ruthless quest for wealth during Southern California's oil boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

'There Will Be Blood, the joint venture between actor Daniel Day-Lewis and director Paul Thomas Anderson, might be the most incendiary combination since the Molotov cocktail.' Kenneth Turan

Irish Mob boss Jack Nicholson plants Matt Damon as an informant within the State Police.

'What makes this a Scorsese film, and not merely a retread, is the director's use of actors, locations and energy, and its buried theme. I am fond of saying that a movie is not about what it's about; it's about how it's about it.' Roger Ebert

The story centers on the relationship between a 12-year-old boy, Oskar, and a vampire child, Eli.

'a stunningly poetic work that will appeal not just to the niche market of horror fans, but to any viewer discerning enough to appreciate the beauty of melancholy, the pain of growing up, and the irresistibility of violence.' Anton Bitel

It tells the story of a shy waitress, played by Audrey Tautou, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better, while struggling with her own isolation. Amélie has grown up isolated from other children.
