The film follows a rebellious teenager, who arrives at a new high school, meets a girl, disobeys his parents and defies the local school bullies.

The film is set in the U.S. state of Washington in 1964 and focuses on Selma Ježková (Björk), a Czech immigrant who has moved to the United States with her son, Gene Ježek (Kostic).
